Notes: The Civilization series has been around since the 90s, and Gathering Storm is the second expansion for the sixth game.


In an important acknowledgement of Oceanic systems of relationality and knowledge, the Māori race begin the game at sea, instead of on the land. Among their unique abilities is “Mana”, allowing for shipbuilding and sailing immediately upon starting the game, increased production for protected lands and forests, and “Kupe’s Voyage”, which bestows benefits including “Science” and “Culture” for each turn before a city is first settled.


In Gathering Storm, the unique Māori architecture is the Marae, which serves as the centre of faith and culture in the game, and also allows for Tourism later on (there better be frybread).

While it’s one thing to wrap your head around the gameplay and strategic elements of the game, it’s another to think about how it feels while playing it, and one thing I didn’t expect was the addition of Māori waiata/music throughout the game.


The use of Te Reo, karakia, waiata, and yes, even haka, is quite moving and makes this game quite special, with credit to the Te Tini a Maui Kapa Haka group in recreating Ka Mate, Pokarekare Ana, and other offerings. Likewise, the Māori New Zealand Arts & Crafts Institute consulted on use of Tā Moko, pronunciation, and other necessary elements of ethically representing a culture.


A modded version of the game has Hongi Hika serve as the leader of the Māori campaign, with abilities including the Ngāpuhi campaign. Mean!


Overall Rating: This is a very exciting development in the potential of telling Māori stories through video games, and one that many people - myself included - are proud to play.
